Does banning an advert get it more publicity?


Hunky Dorys latest campaign - which looks like it is on the verge of being banned due to its controversial imagery and the inference that it is 'Sponsoring Irish Rugby' - tends to make you think that getting your ad banned or pulled from air is fantastic publicity. This latest campaign has made all local press and also featured on the BBC & RTE as a news bulletin.

And they even released the "making of" footage onto YouTube.

For some brands, banning the ad can be a great result. However, there is a balance between 'publicity and controversy at any cost' – and creating a campaign that still does a job and gets consumers to act. Here are some famous examples…

And of course - then there are ads which are created 'not for air' and which are seeded on the internet to chat rooms "as if they have been banned" - when they were never made for that purpose.
